Our recent pub night was a great success. Everyone enjoyed the pig racing which was great fun and caused much laughter as 5 little piggies valiantly raced down the track in each heat leading to a nail biting final to final the winning pig. Thanks to Paul and Michelle for organising the event and Simon and Tamsin for their contributions to the racetrack.
A new addition to the Hall this month was a dart board which is fixed to the wall in the corner of the hall, well away from doors or walkways. This comes with a few rules: only over 16-year-olds can play darts unaccompanied, children 11 years to 16 years must be accompanied by an adult, children under 11 are not allowed to use the dart board although we are investigating the purchase of a dart board for children.
doors and Bar open at 7pm
Come and join us as we turn Wickham Skeith Village Hall into an Indian restaurant!
This event has always proved popular in the past. We will be serving a variety of curries, both meat and vegetarian. Some will be more of a mild variety while others are for those who like their curries slightly stronger. Alongside the curries there will be rice, breads and chutneys. If you have a space left afterwards there is a choice of ice cream cones.
The Bar will be open all night.
There will be an Indian themed table quiz for those who can think, talk and eat, with a small prize for the winners.
Advanced bookings are essential for this event. Please ensure you book by 8:00pm on the 16th March which is the deadline.
Cost £10 for adults and £7 for those aged 11 and under.
Please see booking and payment options below.
1. Please go to the following website. Select the number of adults and children and follow the payment instructions. https://wickham-skeith-village-hall.sumupstore.com/
2. Use the following QR Code and follow the instructions as above.
3. Cash or cheque payment to Rosemarie Hayne at 2 The Broadway.
We are happy to announce that our next Afternoon Tea this winter will be on Saturday 28th March from 2pm to 4pm.This is our first Afternoon Tea on a Saturday as we wish to invite all those who are not usually able to come to a weekday afternoon event. And not just an ordinary tea but a Prosecco Afternoon tea. A glass of prosecco will be on offer along with your tea or coffee. We will be serving a selection of savouries, scones with strawberries and cream and plenty of cakes.
For those of you who are new to this event, we serve our tea during the first hour from 2 to 3pm. Our fun cryptic quizzes will return, with a prize for the winning table. Choose from a selection of games like jigsaws, card games or Bingo, or just spend fun time catching up with friends. Thanks to a grant from the Mid Suffolk Council, we can offer these events free of charge but there will be an opportunity for donations to be made for the work of the village Hall
A date for your diary – On the afternoon of the Grand National we will open the hall to view the Grand National. The Bar will be open all afternoon
Another date for your diary – The FA cup final is on the 16th May and we will open the Hall to watch it together on the big screen. Again, the Bar will be open. And appropriate snacks can be purchased.
This is a replacement activity for the village because this year we will not be holding the summer fete. More details to follow watch this space!
You may have noticed that we have received a new container and it has now been installed behind the Village Hall. This is going to help us greatly as we have struggled for storage for the last few years as we improve and increase our village community equipment. This was purchased through the Parish Council and paid for by the Village CIL money. We would like to say how grateful we are for this facility.
Stephen and I would like to express our gratitude for all those involved in the organisation and running of the wake for Stephen’s mother, Barbara Wells. We very much appreciate that this was not organised through the usual routes. Over the years I had tried to organise a party for her. Something always got in the way, sudden hospital appointments, Covid and then Stephen was taken into hospital. It was a standing joke that she never had a party! I was determined to organise one last party for her even if she was not going to be there. That is why I was so pleased when the Wake was a success. I think she would have enjoyed it.
I would like to thank firstly Rosemarie, for sorting out the hall because without you it could not have happened. The heroes in the kitchen, Louise Reinders and Laura Hempstead, keeping hot drinks going and washing up. People who contributed to the food including Romaine, Jean, Sheila, Margaret, and I know there were many more! We were not short of food! Sorry if I have not mentioned you but you are still very much appreciated, as were those behind the scenes sending out emails and messages. She would have felt very much part of the village even though I know she would not admit it! I would also like to thank all those who dropped off or sent cards and flowers. We received so many; some with long letters of how Mum touched your lives. They were all read and helped us to feel supported and cared for.
Toad MigrationThe annual migration of frogs and toads from their winter hibernation to their breeding ponds has started due to the mild weather. The village Toad Patrol checks round the Grimmer every evening soon after dusk, making a few circuits of the green to rescue toads attempting to cross the road. We currently have vacant slots on Wednesdays and Fridays if you can spare an hour to help. Please contact Melinda mole7@protonmail.com. Please drive carefully while migration season is here. |

Village Litter PickPlease join members of the Parish Council to clear up litter in the parish. Meet at Village Hall at 10am on Saturday 14th March. Refreshments will be available from 11am-noon. |
Wickham Skeith NewsletterThe Wickham Skeith newsletter is a free service provided to villagers, informing everyone about events, parish news, community items, such as the oil purchasing scheme, and a few adverts which help fund it. It is delivered through letterboxes every month by our volunteers. A big thank you to them for turning out promptly and in all weathers - although mostly sunshine this year. Currently our printing costs work out about £1.00 per copy and this is funded through the adverts, contributions from Parish Council and the Church, and the rest comes from Village Hall Committee funds. We hope that you find it useful and would like to continue to receive it. Let us know (mole7@protonmail.com) if you no longer wish to receive it and we will adjust our distribution. |
The next meeting of the Parish Council is:
Monday 2 March 2026 from 7.30pm in the Village Hall.
The Agenda is on the Village Noticeboard and on the village website.
The Annual Meeting of the Parish, and the Annual Parish Council meetings will both take place on 11 May 2026.
All are welcome to attend, and invited to raise issues during the residents’ forum.

Wickham Skeith Wildlife GroupWildlife Friendly VillageThe Wildlife Group helped in St Andrew’s Churchyard during Love Your Yew week. We cleared elder saplings and rubbish from under the yew canopy and removed ivy. This yew is five-trunked and grows on the old boundary of the southern churchyard. We have created a new compost pile further from the yew. It is set within a ‘dead’ hedge woven from prunings, and we hope this will offer an additional wildlife habitat. If you are tidying away grave flowers, please do not put cellophane, plastic flowers and other artificial items on this heap but dispose of in the black refuse bin. Fortnightly ambles on Mondays or Tuesdays. Meet 9am at Village Hall on Tuesday 10th March and Monday 23rd March. Check out our project page at https://uk.inaturalist.org/projects/wickham-skeith-wildlife-2026 First Brimstone seen in the churchyard on 25th February.
If you are interested, but are not on the Wildlife Group email or WhatsApp group, contact Melinda on mole7@protonmail.com |
Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have launched a new recycling scheme for electrical items. Striking pink recycling bins have been provided where residents can dispose of their broken electrical items. This includes things like coffee machines, kettles, mobile phones, tablets, and anything smaller than a 4-slice toaster.
Our nearest bin is in the Buckshorn Lane car park, Eye

Wickham Skeith Country Dance ClubAfter the death of my mother-in-law, Barbara Wells, we did not feel able to meet in January so 18th February was the first meeting of 2026. We had a nice relaxed evening going over dances we had done before and getting our legs moving again! We will NOT be meeting in March as unfortunately I have double booked myself and cannot make any Wednesday in March! Next dates are: April 15th, May 20th, June 17th Please keep an eye out for any special events such as a ceilidh or barn dance. We do have a Facebook page - see Wickham Skeith Country Dance Club. I also post on Nextdoor. Or if you want more information, you can ring Jayne.

Our syndicate has been running for 16 years now and saved us collectively tens of thousands of pounds. Here is a reminder of the workings of the scheme. If you would like to try it out, just drop me an email with contact details.
There will be four opportunities to place orders over the next 12 months.
On or before:
- 30 November
- 31 January
- 31 March
- 30 June
Before each of these dates I will place a reminder in the village newsletter and send you an email reminder. Then let me know if you would like to be included in the next order. I will need to know:
- quantity required (min 500 litres)
- any special instructions - eg concerning delivery
Within a couple of days of the above dates, a bulk order will be placed with the oil company which offers the best deal, usually several pence per litre lower than the price available to customers who order individually. I will let you know the same day:
- the name of the company
- price
- expected delivery date
- the company's contact details should you need to speak to them directly
I will pass your address and phone numbers to the company which will contact you regarding payment (but normally only if they have not delivered to you before) and they will bill you directly.
If you have any questions, please email jerrybassett@icloud.com
The next order deadline is 31 March. If you need oil, please email drop an email to jerrybassett@icloud.com

It is also a good opportunity for anyone interested in taking part to come and find out about it.

It is always a good fundraiser for our lovely church, and a great opportunity to come together creatively.
I will email all the usual suspects, but anyone else who would like to add to the presentations, or help with tea tent, or monitor the church for a short session each day, please contact me and we can start the ball rolling!
