Saturday 16th May – FA Cup Final

We showed the FA cup final on the 16th May and, although those who were there enjoyed a drink from the bar and watching a good game of football, it was poorly attended and so we won’t repeat this next year. Is there any interest in the village to watch any of the World Cup England games on the big Screen?

Saturday 20th June – “Summer Event”

- with Small Beer festival, Prosecco and wine table, Kids bar, BBQ, Games on the Green and a Decorated non-motorised Wheeled vehicle competition.  Phew! So much to enjoy– start time 12 midday

Kevin Knights, our licensee, is organising a small beer festival with 3 or 4 local brews, and there will be a prosecco and wine bar and a children’s bar for soft drinks and crisps etc.  So come along and join us for a BBQ lunch. In the afternoon, Seb is organising games on The Green which will be for families and people of all ages who wish to join in.

“Decorate a Wheeled Vehicle”

We are encouraging you all to participate in our “Decorate a Wheeled Vehicle” display.

There will be a prize for the best decorated non-motorised wheeled vehicle, e.g. wheelbarrow, bicycle, pushchair, pram, scooter etc. Decorations on any theme you choose.

We will be holding a raffle for a crate of booze so please can you donate a bottle or can of booze either alcoholic or non-alcoholic. All donations to a member of the Village Hall Committee or to the Village Hall on the Friday evening 19th June.

Bring a picnic chair or rug, bring your dog, bring your family, bring your friends. And BRING your DECORATED WHEELED VEHICLE.

As usual this will be a licensed event so only drinks bought from the bar can be consumed.

Wimbledon Men’s Final on the Big Screen – 12th July 3.30pm

Village Hall AGM

We held the AGM recently and the Chair, Secretary and Treasurer all volunteered to serve for one more year only, but will all step down next year at the AGM 2027.  The last year was packed full of events, and it is so good to see the Hall being used regularly. A full Chair’s report is posted on the Wickham Skeith Website so please take a look!

The Treasurer’s report was an accurate analysis of where we stand financially. Thank you to all of you who contributed in any way, through attending events, buying a pint, cooking, volunteering to help, or any of the many ways villagers get involved.

Our main expenses this year have been to improve the fabric of the building such as, renovating the porch, electrical work for the kitchen, installing the oak posts at the front of the hall and buying two new gazebos. Many of our expenses have increased this year, including cleaning, insurance and licensing. Hence, we need to make more income from our events and rent next year to cover these costs. Thanks must go to Rosemarie Hayne who has done an excellent job as Treasurer and Booking Secretary this last year and to Dave Challinor who oversees the maintenance of the hall. Also, to Will Elphick who, despite his time away in hospital, has continued as Secretary for the Committee.

We still need you!

The Village Hall and Green are an important part of the life of the Village. We need volunteers to help support the work of the Village Hall committee.

If you can help, please get in touch with me, Jenny Elphick, at jennymelphick@gmail.com or on 0774546091

Hall Bookings

Do you have a little time spare in your life?  Would you like to contribute in some way to the life of the village? Managing the Hall bookings is not an onerous task but it is a very important one. We are looking for someone who would be willing to keep the Village Hall bookings diary, send out quarterly invoices, follow up on enquiries, and keep the Village Hall Committee up to date on bookings. Rosemarie Hayne is presently doing this role and has systems in place, and she would be willing to give you some direction. If you are interested or want to know more Just contact her on wsvh.treasurer@gmail.com

We need you!

The Village Hall and Green are an important part of the life of the Village. We need volunteers to help support the work of the Village Hall Committee. We manage the building, and the finances, and plan and organise different events throughout the year. This raises the funds needed annually to keep the hall working and creates community among our village. We also provide a space for other organisation and individuals within and outside the village to put on events.

If you can help, please get in touch with me, Jenny Elphick at jennymelphick@gmail.com

Volunteer Drivers

Occasionally we are in need of drivers to take villagers to the G.P or hospital. We already have a few people willing to do this but if you are interested, please phone Sue 766222 for details.

Wickham Skeith Country Dance Club

We met on April 15th but I was worried as we had a few regulars drop out due to illness. I hope that you are all feeling better now.  As I’ve hurt my back as well, I was unable to join in. But I was thrilled when we had 4 new members come along and they all seemed to enjoy themselves. We had a lovely evening and did quite a few dances, enjoyed some late Easter Eggs and are looking forward to next month when we hope to have everyone back.

Everyone is welcome to join us. If you are new to the village, it’s a good way of meeting people. You don’t need any experience or any special equipment and you get a cup of tea or coffee! It would be lovely to see more of you!

Our next dance meetings are:

Wednesday June 17th 7pm to 10pm & Wednesday July 15th 7pm to 10pm

If you want more information, you can ring Jayne

2026 Flower Festival

We enjoyed welcome dry weather for our three-day festival, which was much appreciated. The theme of ‘A Walk on the Wild Side,’ had some quirky interpretations, but all the exhibitors rose to the occasion and showed imaginative, interesting and beautiful work. Thank you also to Robert and Rachel Cohen for their splendid concert on the Sunday evening.

Sincere thanks to absolutely everyone who had any part at all in the success of another festival. Margaret Knights.

No-one guessed all the floral titles; one lucky visitor guessed 13 out of the 14.

If you can remember, here they are:

  1. We‘ll meet again (in porch); 2. Life sustainer (at font); 3. The Garden of Eden; 4. Oscar Wilde; 5. Country roads; 6. Go Ape; 7. As I walked out one Midsummer morning; 8. From the Shire to Mordor; 9. Snow White (left of Altar); 10. The Dark side of the moon (the Artemis splashdown); 11. Here be monsters; 12. Just going along with the flow; 13. The Wild West; 14 The Falklands.

An apron was left behind in the tea tent after the Flower Festival. If it belongs to you, please phone Sue

Wickham Skeith Oil Syndicate

The next order deadline is March 31st.  If you need oil, please email jerrybassett@icloud.com or, if you do not have access to email, call 07918 028621

Our syndicate has been running for 16 years now and saved us collectively tens of thousands of pounds. Here is a reminder of the workings of the scheme. If you would like to try it out, just drop me an email with contact details.

There will be four opportunities to place orders over the next 12 months.

On or before:

-  30 June

Before each of these dates I will place a reminder in the village newsletter and send you an email reminder. Then let me know if you would like to be included in the next order. I will need to know:

- quantity required (min 500 litres)

- any special instructions - eg concerning delivery

Within a couple of days of the above dates, a bulk order will be placed with the oil company which offers the best deal, usually several pence per litre lower than the price available to customers who order individually. I will let you know the same day:
- the name of the company

- price

- expected delivery date

- the company's contact details should you need to speak to them directly

I will pass your address and phone numbers to the company which will contact you regarding payment (but normally only if they have not delivered to you before) and they will bill you directly.

If you have any questions, please email jerrybassett@icloud.com

Wickham Skeith Newsletter

The Wickham Skeith newsletter is a free service provided to villagers, informing everyone about events, parish news, community items, such as the oil purchasing scheme, and a few adverts which help fund it. It is delivered through letterboxes every month by our volunteers. A big thank you to them for turning out promptly and in all weathers - although mostly sunshine this year. Currently our printing costs work out about £1.00 per copy and this is funded through the adverts, contributions from Parish Council and the Church, and the rest comes from Village Hall Committee funds. We hope that you find it useful and would like to continue to receive it.

Let us know (mole7@protonmail.com) if you no longer wish to receive it and we will adjust our distribution.

Small Electrical Item Recycling

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have launched a new recycling scheme for electrical items. Striking pink recycling bins have been provided where residents can dispose of their broken electrical items. This includes things like coffee machines, kettles, mobile phones, tablets, and anything smaller than a 4-slice toaster.

Our nearest bin is in the Buckshorn Lane car park, Eye
